Special Education Support Services
Our management and staff are committed to the belief that one positive relationship can change a student's life immeasurably for the better. Our Education Mentors are carefully selected to predict a positive relationship with each student. When trust develops, a student feels safe to grow, to learn and to change.
The Special Education Support Services program is an approved Connecticut Department of Education transition program. We provide one on one transition services throughout eastern and central Connecticut to students who have been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, Asperger's syndrome, autism, PDD/NOS, emotional disabilities, and mental illness. Typical programs include vocational assessments, job exploration, accessing community resources, daily living skills assessment and instruction, social interaction and/or application of functional academics such as budgeting in community settings. Many of the students receive support in social or behavioral areas that have impeded their ability to grow and learn in the past. The goal is to teach each student to become as independent as possible. We also assist students to connect with adult service agencies such as BRS, DMHAS or DDS. Support may be provided within the school to help students achieve success in special education or regular education classes. Programs can then continue later in the day in a community based setting such as a job site. Some students receive all services at community sites. Programs are funded by school districts.
Project Genesis provides transportation. Our staff can pick students up at their home schools or from the student's place of residence.
The SESS Program Offers:
- Community-based programs for student entering adulthood with an emphasis on transition goals that focus on employment, community, and independent living.
- In-school services for special education students directed at maintaining success within their own school.
- Community-based transition programs for special education students with behavioral difficulties often directed toward successful reintegration of the student back into their own school.
These are only general outlines of our available services. Each student's plan is highly individualized to meet their unique needs. Our staff participates with the student, family and school personnel in developing a program which meets the needs of each young person, as determined in the IEP process.
